Austria produces some of Europe’s most distinctive wines, largely unknown outside the country. Grüner Veltliner — a crisp, peppery white grape grown throughout Lower Austria — is Austria’s signature white. The Wachau valley produces world-class Riesling classified into three quality tiers: Steinfeder, Federspiel, and Smaragd. Burgenland in the east specialises in rich reds — Blaufränkisch and Zweigelt — and luscious sweet wines from Neusiedlersee. Wine tastings and Heuriger (wine taverns) are a beloved Austrian tradition.
