Getting Around Italy

Italy has an excellent high-speed rail network. Trenitalia and Italo trains connect major cities rapidly: Rome to Florence in 1.5 hours, Milan to Venice in 2.5 hours. Book train tickets in advance online for the best prices. If renting a car, be aware of ZTL (Zona Traffico Limitato) restricted zones in city centers — entering without a permit results in heavy fines. In Venice, transport is by vaporetto (water bus) or on foot. Rome, Milan, and Naples have metro systems. Consider tourist passes: Roma Pass, Firenze Card, and Venezia Unica offer combined transport and museum access.
