The Bahamas' greatest cultural celebration and one of the Caribbean's most extraordinary festivals. Junkanoo is a massive overnight street parade held in Nassau on December 26 (Boxing Day) and January 1 (New Year's Day), from 2am until dawn. Thousands of costumed 'rushers' in elaborate hand-crafted costumes of crepe paper, glitter, and feathers parade to thundering goatskin drums, cowbells, and brass horns in a spectacle of colour, sound, and community pride. Rooted in the traditions of enslaved Africans who were allowed to celebrate during the Christmas holiday, Junkanoo is the soul of Bahamian identity.
