Arabic Coffee (Qahwa) & Dates

About

The cornerstone of Bahraini hospitality — Arabic coffee (qahwa) is made from lightly roasted green coffee beans flavoured with cardamom and sometimes saffron or rose water, producing a pale golden brew served in small handle-less cups (fenjan) without sugar. It is always accompanied by a selection of dates — fresh, dried, stuffed with almonds, or rolled in sesame. Accepting qahwa and dates when offered in a Bahraini home or business is a fundamental courtesy; refusing without reason is considered disrespectful. The ritual of pouring and sharing qahwa embodies Bahraini culture.
