Bahrain’s most distinctive confection and a source of intense national pride — a dense, jewel-coloured jelly-like sweet made from cornstarch, sugar, ghee, saffron, cardamom, and rose water, studded with nuts and slow-stirred in copper pots for hours until it achieves a glossy, translucent, aromatic perfection. Bahraini halwa is markedly different from Turkish or Indian halwa — darker, more intensely spiced, and uniquely fragrant. Given as gifts at celebrations, served with qahwa, and sold in specialist halwa shops throughout Muharraq.
