The Arabian Gulf waters around Bahrain are home to outstanding seafood beyond hammour: jumbo Bahraini shrimp (rubian) are fat, sweet, and exceptional grilled with garlic butter; zubaidi (silver pomfret) is a prized flat fish with delicate white flesh; and crab, lobster, and sea urchin appear on the menus of Bahrain’s better seafood restaurants. The Central Market (Manama fish souk) sells the day’s catch from 6am, and visiting at dawn to see the boats unload is a memorable experience. Several excellent seafood restaurants cluster around the Manama waterfront.
