Belgium is very safe for tourists. Petty theft and pickpocketing are the main concerns in crowded areas of Brussels (Grand Place, Midi station) and popular tourist cities. Violent crime against tourists is rare. Exercise standard precautions with bags and valuables, especially on public transport.

Belgium is part of the Schengen Area. Citizens of the EU, UK, USA, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand can visit for up to 90 days without a visa. From 2025, travellers from visa-exempt countries will need ETIAS pre-authorization — a quick online registration, not a traditional visa. Always check the official ETIAS site before departure.

Belgium's food scene far exceeds its reputation for chocolate and waffles. Must-try dishes include moules-frites (mussels and fries), carbonades flamandes (beef braised in Belgian beer), waterzooi (Ghent's cream-based stew), and speculoos biscuits. Belgian frites served in a paper cone are among the world's best, and Belgium has more Michelin-starred restaurants per capita than France.

April to June and September to October offer the best weather — mild temperatures, fewer crowds, and cities at their most pleasant. July and August are peak season with festivals (including Tomorrowland). Winter is magical for Christmas markets in Bruges and Brussels. Tomorrowland in late July is a world draw but requires planning a year in advance.

Most visitors spend 5–10 days in Belgium, which gives enough time to cover the main highlights. Shorter trips are possible if you focus on one or two regions.

Belgium uses the Euro (€). Cards are widely accepted in cities, but carry some cash for markets, smaller restaurants, and rural areas.

The official language is Dutch (Flemish), French, German. In popular tourist areas English is generally understood, but locals always appreciate a few words in the local language.
