Bulgaria

Bulgaria is generally safe for tourists. Petty theft — pickpocketing in crowded tourist areas of Sofia and beach resorts — is the main concern. Violent crime against tourists is rare. Stray dogs can be encountered in rural areas; give them space and don't approach. Standard European precautions apply: keep bags secure, use official taxis, and be cautious of unlicensed currency exchange booths.

EU citizens don't need a visa. US, UK, Canadian, Australian, and New Zealand citizens can visit visa-free for up to 90 days. Note that Bulgaria is an EU member but not yet in the Schengen Area (accession is in progress), so it has its own 90-day limit separate from the Schengen zone. Always verify current entry requirements with the Bulgarian embassy before travel.

May–June and September–October are ideal — mild temperatures, blooming landscapes (rose season peaks in late May), and fewer crowds than summer. July and August are peak beach season on the Black Sea; busy and hot but festive. Bansko and the mountain resorts operate ski seasons from December to April. The Rose Festival in Kazanlak (early June) is one of Bulgaria's most spectacular events.

Bulgarian cuisine is hearty and flavourful. Must-tries include shopska salad (tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers, and white sirene cheese), banitsa (flaky phyllo pastry filled with cheese or spinach), kavarma (slow-cooked meat and vegetable stew), kebapche (grilled minced meat rolls), and tarator (cold yogurt and cucumber soup). Bulgarian yogurt is world-famous and eaten daily. Rakia (fruit brandy) is the national spirit — always served with meze.

Most visitors spend 7–14 days in Bulgaria, which gives enough time to cover the main highlights. Shorter trips are possible if you focus on one or two regions.

Bulgaria uses the Bulgarian Lev (лв). Cards are widely accepted in cities, but carry some cash for markets, smaller restaurants, and rural areas.

The official language is Bulgarian. In popular tourist areas English is generally understood, but locals always appreciate a few words in the local language.
