Colombia has transformed dramatically over the past two decades and most tourist areas — Bogotá, Medellín, Cartagena, and the coffee region — are visited by millions of travelers safely each year. Standard city precautions apply: avoid flashing valuables, use ride-hailing apps at night, and stay alert in nightlife districts. Some rural border areas still warrant caution — check current advisories before venturing off the standard tourist trail.

Citizens of the US, UK, EU, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand do not need a visa for tourist stays up to 90 days — just a valid passport. Always check current requirements with the Colombian consulate before travel.

Tap water is safe to drink in Bogotá, Medellín, and most major cities. In smaller towns, the Caribbean coast, and the Amazon, stick to bottled or filtered water to be safe.

A 10% voluntary service charge (propina) is often added to restaurant bills — the waiter will usually ask if you want to include it, and it's fine to decline. Rounding up for taxis and tipping tour guides USD 5–10/day is appreciated but not obligatory.

The best time to visit Colombia is Dec–March & July–Aug (driest seasons). During these months you'll find the most pleasant weather, fewer crowds, and the best overall experience.

Most visitors spend 10–14 days in Colombia, which gives enough time to cover the main highlights. Shorter trips are possible if you focus on one or two regions.

Colombia uses the Colombian Peso (COP). Cards are widely accepted in cities, but carry some cash for markets, smaller restaurants, and rural areas.

The official language is Spanish. In popular tourist areas English is generally understood, but locals always appreciate a few words in the local language.
