The Czech Republic has the highest beer consumption per capita in the world — and arguably produces the finest lager on earth. Pilsner Urquell (Plzeň) invented the golden lager style in 1842. Budvar (České Budějovice) produces the original Budweiser. Kozel, Gambrinus, and Bernard are beloved national brands. Always order the unpasteurised draft (tank beer / tankové pivo) wherever available — it bears no resemblance to bottled Czech beer sold abroad.
