Scandinavia’s traditional spirit — a clear or golden distillate of grain or potato, flavoured with caraway and dill (and sometimes anise, fennel, or citrus peel). Danish akvavit is typically lighter and more delicate than Norwegian barrel-aged versions. Served ice-cold in small tulip glasses at festive occasions, always accompanied by a cold beer (snaps og øl). Saying ‘skål’ (cheers) and maintaining eye contact during the toast is a Danish social rule taken seriously.
