Jaanipäev (Estonian Midsummer)

About

Estonia's most important public holiday, celebrated on June 23–24 with bonfires, folk music, and dancing across the country. Estonians head to the countryside, islands, or family homesteads to light the traditional Jaani bonfire — the bigger the better — and celebrate the near-endless summer night. On Saaremaa and Hiiumaa islands, where the tradition is most alive, communities light massive bonfires on hilltops visible across the sea. One of the most authentic and joyful celebrations in Northern Europe.
