Finland is one of the world's safest countries — consistently ranking in the top three globally. Violent crime is extremely rare. The main concerns are petty theft in Helsinki's central areas and, in winter, extreme cold in Lapland (temperatures can drop to -30°C or below). Always pack appropriate clothing for winter visits to northern Finland. Road conditions can be hazardous in winter — check conditions before driving.

Finland is part of the EU and Schengen Area. EU citizens need only a valid ID. US, UK, Canadian, Australian, and New Zealand citizens can visit visa-free for up to 90 days in the Schengen zone. From 2025, many visitors will need ETIAS pre-authorisation — a quick online registration. Always check requirements before travel.

The best time to see the Aurora Borealis in Finland is from late September to late March, when nights are dark enough. Finnish Lapland — particularly around Rovaniemi, Levi, Saariselkä, and Inari — offers some of the world's best viewing conditions, with an average of 200 aurora nights per year. New moon periods offer the darkest skies. Winter also brings husky safaris, reindeer sleigh rides, and the magical snowscapes of Lapland.

Finnish cuisine is honest, fresh, and deeply rooted in nature. Must-tries include lohikeitto (creamy salmon soup with dill), karjalanpiirakka (Karelian rice pies topped with egg butter), korvapuusti (giant cinnamon rolls), grilled makkara (sausage) over an open fire, and reindeer dishes from Lapland (smoked, stewed, or pan-fried). Wild berries — cloudberries, lingonberries, bilberries — are a summer obsession. Salmiakki (salty liquorice) is an acquired taste beloved by Finns. No Finnish visit is complete without at least one genuine sauna experience.

The best time to visit Finland is June–August & Dec–Feb. During these months you'll find the most pleasant weather, fewer crowds, and the best overall experience.

Most visitors spend 7–14 days in Finland, which gives enough time to cover the main highlights. Shorter trips are possible if you focus on one or two regions.

Finland uses the Euro (€). Cards are widely accepted in cities, but carry some cash for markets, smaller restaurants, and rural areas.

The official language is Finnish, Swedish. In popular tourist areas English is generally understood, but locals always appreciate a few words in the local language.
