Gion Matsuri – Kyoto

One of Japan's three great festivals, held throughout July in Kyoto. The highlight is the Yamaboko Junko procession on July 17th — enormous ornately decorated floats paraded through the city, some dating to the 14th century. The Yoiyama evenings before the procession create a magical street festival atmosphere.
