Yakushima Island

A UNESCO World Heritage island off southern Kyushu, blanketed in ancient cedar forest. The Jomon Sugi — a cedar estimated at up to 7,200 years old — is one of Japan's most extraordinary natural wonders. The island's primeval forest directly inspired Studio Ghibli's Princess Mononoke.
