Malaysia is generally very safe for tourists, with low rates of violent crime. Petty theft and bag-snatching can occur in crowded areas like Bukit Bintang, Petaling Street, and busy night markets. Exercise normal caution with belongings and avoid poorly lit areas alone at night, especially in parts of Chow Kit, Kuala Lumpur.

US citizens don't need a visa for stays under 90 days for tourism purposes. Travelers must complete the Malaysia Digital Arrival Card (MDAC) online within 3 days before arrival. Always check the official Malaysia Immigration Department website before you travel, as entry requirements can change.

Tap water in Malaysia is treated to safe standards, but it's best to boil it before drinking due to old pipework in some buildings. Most locals and visitors stick to bottled or filtered water, which is cheap and widely available. Ice in restaurants and hotels is generally safe as it's commercially produced.

Tipping is not customary and not expected in Malaysia. Many restaurants already add a 10% service charge to the bill. Rounding up for taxis or leaving small change for exceptional service is appreciated but never required. Hotel porters and housekeeping may appreciate a small RM2–5 tip.

The best time to visit Malaysia is March–October (year-round for KL & Penang; avoid Nov–Feb monsoon on the East Coast islands). During these months you'll find the most pleasant weather, fewer crowds, and the best overall experience.

Most visitors spend 10–14 days in Malaysia, which gives enough time to cover the main highlights. Shorter trips are possible if you focus on one or two regions.
