Mauritius has very low rates of violent crime and is considered one of the safer destinations in the Indian Ocean region. Petty theft — bag-snatching and pickpocketing in crowded markets, beaches, and nightlife areas like Grand Baie — is the main concern. Use registered taxis and keep valuables out of sight.

US citizens don't need a visa for tourist stays of up to 90 days. You'll need a passport valid at least 6 months beyond your stay and proof of onward or return travel. Check the Mauritian Passport and Immigration Office website before you travel.

Tap water is chlorinated and technically safe to drink across the island, though it can have a noticeable chlorine taste. Many visitors prefer bottled or filtered water, especially in the first few days — most hotels provide it.

Tipping is not mandatory but is appreciated for good service. Guidelines: 10–15% at restaurants, 10% for tour guides, 100–200 MUR for taxi drivers, and around 100 MUR/day for hotel housekeeping. Many resorts add a service charge automatically — check your bill first.

The best time to visit Mauritius is May–December (dry season). During these months you'll find the most pleasant weather, fewer crowds, and the best overall experience.
