Portugal's most iconic food export — a flaky puff-pastry tart filled with warm, silky custard and dusted with cinnamon and powdered sugar. Born in the Jerónimos Monastery in the 18th century, the original recipe is still served at Pastéis de Belém in Lisbon, where queues form daily. Best eaten warm, straight from the oven.
