Romania is very safe, with low rates of violent crime — often rated safer than many Western European countries. The main risks are petty theft (pickpocketing on crowded trains and buses) and stray dogs in some areas outside city centers. Standard travel precautions are all that's needed.

US citizens don't need a visa for stays under 90 days. Romania joined the Schengen Area fully (both land and air borders) in March 2024, so the standard Schengen 90-day visa-free rule now applies. From 2025, travelers will also need ETIAS authorization — a simple online pre-registration, not a traditional visa.

Tap water in Bucharest and most major cities is generally safe to drink and meets EU standards, though many locals prefer bottled water for taste. In smaller towns and rural areas, bottled or filtered water is a safer bet.

Tipping around 10% is standard at sit-down restaurants if a service charge isn't already included — check your bill first. Rounding up for taxis and small tips for hotel staff are appreciated but not obligatory.

The best time to visit Romania is May–Sept. During these months you'll find the most pleasant weather, fewer crowds, and the best overall experience.
