Black Pineapple

About

Antigua’s black pineapple (Ananas comosus var.) is considered one of the sweetest pineapples in the world — a small, almost black-skinned variety grown in the Fig Tree Hill area of the island. Intensely sweet with almost no acidity, it bears no resemblance to the supermarket pineapple. Sold from roadside stalls, especially along Fig Tree Drive, they’re usually peeled and sliced to order. Eating a fresh Antigua black pineapple on the roadside is one of the island’s purest pleasures.
