Though less famous than Rio's Carnival, Buenos Aires celebrates its own version with great energy throughout February. The comparsas — neighbourhood drumming and dancing groups — parade through barrios including San Telmo, La Boca, and Palermo. The murga (theatrical street performance combining percussion, dance, and social satire) is unique to the Río de la Plata region and deeply rooted in Buenos Aires identity. Admission to neighbourhood Carnival celebrations is free or very cheap.
