Argentina is generally safe for tourists, though precautions are warranted in large cities. Buenos Aires has areas of petty crime — pickpocketing and bag snatching occur in tourist zones (La Boca, San Telmo, the Subte metro), and express kidnappings have been reported. Avoid displaying expensive cameras or phones openly. Mendoza, Bariloche, and Patagonian regions are considerably safer. Always use registered taxi companies or apps like Cabify — never hail taxis on the street in Buenos Aires.

Citizens of the US, UK, EU, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand do not need a visa for stays up to 90 days. A valid passport is required. Argentina no longer charges a reciprocity fee for US citizens. Always verify current entry requirements with the Argentine consulate or DNREC immigration authority before travel, as policies have changed in recent years.

Argentina spans extreme latitudes, so timing depends on what you're visiting. Buenos Aires: October–April for warm, pleasant weather. Argentina's food culture centres on beef — the asado (barbecue) is a near-sacred ritual where meats are slow-grilled over wood or charcoal with the finest Argentine cuts including bife de chorizo, vacío, and entraña. Empanadas (baked or fried pastries filled with spiced beef, chicken, or cheese) are the nation's greatest snack. Dulce de leche (caramel spread) appears on everything. Pair meals with a glass of Mendoza Malbec — Argentina's world-famous red wine. End with an alfajor (shortbread sandwich filled with dulce de leche).
