Alfajores

About

Argentina's iconic biscuit-sandwich — two soft, crumbly shortbread rounds made with cornstarch, joined by a thick layer of dulce de leche and rolled in desiccated coconut or coated in dark, milk, or white chocolate. Alfajores are eaten at every time of day — at breakfast with coffee, as afternoon snacks (merienda), and as gifts. Havanna is the most famous brand, with cafes across the country. Regional varieties from Córdoba and Mar del Plata are considered the finest.
