Held in the Walloon town of Binche on Shrove Tuesday, this is one of the world's most extraordinary and ancient carnivals — listed on UNESCO's Intangible Cultural Heritage list. The centrepiece is the Gilles: men dressed in elaborate medieval costumes with wax masks and ostrich-feather hats who parade through the town throwing blood oranges into the crowd.
