Held in late January in Pernik near Sofia, Surva is Europe's largest masquerade festival — a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage tradition. Thousands of Kukeri (mummers) dressed in elaborate beast-like costumes covered in bells parade through the streets to drive away evil spirits and welcome spring. The sound of hundreds of bells and the sight of towering horned masks is unforgettable.
