Khmer New Year (Choul Chnam Thmey)

About

Cambodia's most important national celebration, held over three days in mid-April (usually April 13–15) to mark the end of the harvest season and the Khmer lunar new year. The entire country shuts down as families return to home provinces; temples are packed with offerings, traditional games are played in streets and parks, and water splashing — a symbol of washing away bad luck — begins as a gentle custom and quickly escalates into a joyful nationwide water fight. Siem Reap and Phnom Penh host the most spectacular public celebrations.
