Water Festival (Bon Om Touk)

About

The most spectacular festival in the Cambodian calendar, held in Phnom Penh over three days in November to celebrate the extraordinary reversal of the Tonle Sap River — when the Mekong's falling water level causes the river to reverse its flow and the Tonle Sap Lake begins to drain. Over 400 illuminated longboats race on the Tonle Sap River in front of the Royal Palace, watched by hundreds of thousands of spectators. The festival culminates in a mesmerising flotilla of illuminated boats on the final evening, with fireworks over the river.
