Chile is generally one of the safer countries in South America, though petty crime — bag snatching and pickpocketing — occurs in central Santiago and Valparaíso. Occasional protests can disrupt Plaza Italia and downtown Santiago; avoid these areas when demonstrations are underway. Patagonia and the Atacama are very safe, though remote and require sensible trip planning.

Citizens of the US, UK, EU, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand do not need a visa for tourist stays up to 90 days — just a valid passport. Some nationalities pay a reciprocity fee on arrival. Always check current requirements with the Chilean consulate before travel.

Tap water is safe to drink in Santiago and most major cities. In San Pedro de Atacama and some northern towns, tap water has a high mineral content that can upset sensitive stomachs — bottled water is a safer bet there.

A 10% service charge (propina) is often added to restaurant bills automatically — you can decline it, but most people leave it. Round up for taxis, and tip guides on multi-day treks or tours C$ equivalent of USD 5–10/day if service was good.

The best time to visit Chile is Sept–Nov & March–May (Dec–Feb for Patagonia). During these months you'll find the most pleasant weather, fewer crowds, and the best overall experience.

Most visitors spend 10–14 days in Chile, which gives enough time to cover the main highlights. Shorter trips are possible if you focus on one or two regions.

Chile uses the Chilean Peso (CLP). Cards are widely accepted in cities, but carry some cash for markets, smaller restaurants, and rural areas.

The official language is Spanish. In popular tourist areas English is generally understood, but locals always appreciate a few words in the local language.
