Croatia

Croatia is one of Europe's safest destinations. Crime against tourists is rare, and the country consistently ranks among the EU's safest. The main concerns are petty theft in crowded tourist areas (Dubrovnik's old town, Split's Riva) and overpriced tourist traps. Water safety is excellent — the Adriatic is very clean. Standard European precautions apply.

Croatia joined the Schengen Area in January 2023. EU citizens need only an ID card. US, UK, Canadian, Australian, and New Zealand citizens can visit visa-free for up to 90 days within the Schengen zone. From 2025, many visitors will need ETIAS pre-authorization — a simple online registration. Always check the latest requirements before travel.

May–June and September–October are ideal — warm sunny weather, fewer crowds than peak summer, lower prices, and the sea still warm enough to swim. July and August are peak season: hot, packed with tourists (Dubrovnik especially), and expensive. Spring is perfect for Plitvice Lakes (waterfalls at their fullest). Winter is quiet on the coast but Zagreb comes alive for its celebrated Christmas Advent markets.

Croatian cuisine is outstanding. Must-tries include peka (lamb or octopus slow-cooked under a bell-shaped lid over embers), crni rižot (black risotto made with cuttlefish ink), grilled Adriatic fish (riba na žaru) with olive oil and blitva (Swiss chard), pasticada (Dalmatian beef stew in wine), and Istrian truffles shaved over pasta or eggs. Pair everything with local Plavac Mali wine or Malvasia white wine from Istria.

Most visitors spend 10–14 days in Croatia, which gives enough time to cover the main highlights. Shorter trips are possible if you focus on one or two regions.

Croatia uses the Euro (€). Cards are widely accepted in cities, but carry some cash for markets, smaller restaurants, and rural areas.

The official language is Croatian. In popular tourist areas English is generally understood, but locals always appreciate a few words in the local language.
