Montenegro is rated Level 1 (Exercise Normal Precautions) by the US State Department and is one of the safer countries in the Balkans, with very low rates of violent crime against visitors. Petty theft and pickpocketing can occur in crowded spots like Kotor Old Town and Budva during peak season (June–August) — keep bags zipped and use licensed taxis.

US citizens don't need a visa for stays up to 90 days within a 180-day period. Montenegro isn't a Schengen member, so time spent here doesn't count against your Schengen allowance. You must register your stay within 24 hours — hotels and guesthouses do this automatically for you.

Yes — tap water meets EU quality standards and is safe to drink in Podgorica, Kotor, Budva, Tivat, Herceg Novi, and Bar. Some visitors prefer bottled water on the coast in summer due to a stronger mineral taste and heavier chlorination.

Tipping isn't mandatory but is appreciated for good service. Rounding up the bill or leaving 10% at restaurants is standard, with up to 20% for exceptional service. Tour guides and drivers welcome a small tip as well.

The best time to visit Montenegro is May–June & Sept–Oct (shoulder season). During these months you'll find the most pleasant weather, fewer crowds, and the best overall experience.
