Held every first Sunday of August in the town of Sinj since 1715, the Alka is a traditional equestrian competition commemorating Croatia’s victory over the Ottoman army. Knights in 18th-century costumes gallop at full speed to lance a metal ring (alka) hanging on a rope. The tradition is listed as a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage and remains one of Croatia’s most authentic and stirring folk events.
