Croatia’s beloved spirit — a powerful fruit brandy distilled from grapes, plums, figs, or herbs, typically 40–60% alcohol. Travarica (herb rakija from Dalmatia) is flavoured with medicinal plants and taken as a digestive. Lozovaca (grape) and šljivovica (plum) are the most common. No Croatian meal starts or ends without a small glass. Never refuse a host’s homemade rakija — it is a mark of deep hospitality.
