Hungary is very safe, with low rates of violent crime. The most notorious risk for visitors is Budapest's 'consumption scam' — friendly locals (often attractive young women) approach tourists in the nightlife district and lure them into a bar, resulting in an astronomical bill for a few drinks. Avoid accompanying strangers to bars they suggest, and always check prices before ordering. Standard precautions against pickpocketing on trams and the metro also apply.

US citizens don't need a visa for stays under 90 days in the Schengen Area. From 2025, travelers will need ETIAS authorization — a simple online pre-registration, not a traditional visa. Check the official ETIAS website before you travel.

Swimwear is required in all public areas (no nudity, unlike Germany or Austria's saunas). Bring your own towel, flip-flops, and a swim cap if required for certain pools. Széchenyi and Gellért are the most famous baths — arrive early or book online to avoid long queues, especially on weekends.

April–June and September–October offer mild weather, blooming or golden scenery, and fewer crowds than peak summer. July–August is warmest and busiest, especially around Lake Balaton and the Sziget Festival. Winter is quieter but Budapest's Christmas markets and snow-dusted architecture have their own charm.

Most visitors spend 5–8 days in Hungary, which gives enough time to cover the main highlights. Shorter trips are possible if you focus on one or two regions.

Hungary uses the Hungarian Forint (Ft). Cards are widely accepted in cities, but carry some cash for markets, smaller restaurants, and rural areas.

The official language is Hungarian. In popular tourist areas English is generally understood, but locals always appreciate a few words in the local language.
