Morocco

Morocco is generally very safe and welcomes over 18 million visitors a year without major incident. The main risks are petty theft and tourist scams — persistent touts, fake guides, and aggressive henna artists in the medinas of Marrakech and Fes. Solo women may face frequent unwanted attention; dressing modestly and staying in busy, well-lit areas helps.

US citizens don't need a visa for tourist stays up to 90 days, under a long-standing bilateral agreement. You'll need a passport valid at least 6 months beyond your entry date with at least two blank pages.

Tap water in major cities (Rabat, Marrakech, Fes, Tangier, Agadir) is treated to meet WHO standards, but many visitors still prefer bottled water, especially in rural areas and the desert, to avoid stomach upset while adjusting to the local diet.

Tipping isn't mandatory but is customary. Guidelines: 10–15% at restaurants, 10–20 MAD per bag for porters and per night for housekeeping, 50–100 MAD/day for tour guides, and 10–20% (or rounding up) for taxis and private drivers.

The best time to visit Morocco is March–May & Sept–Nov. During these months you'll find the most pleasant weather, fewer crowds, and the best overall experience.

Most visitors spend 8–12 days in Morocco, which gives enough time to cover the main highlights. Shorter trips are possible if you focus on one or two regions.

Morocco uses the Moroccan Dirham (MAD). Cards are widely accepted in cities, but carry some cash for markets, smaller restaurants, and rural areas.

The official language is Arabic & Tamazight (official), French widely used. In popular tourist areas English is generally understood, but locals always appreciate a few words in the local language.
