Aruba

Aruba is consistently ranked one of the safest islands in the entire Caribbean. Violent crime against tourists is extremely rare, and the island has a well-equipped police force. Standard precautions apply — keep valuables off unattended beach towels and lock car doors when sightseeing in Arikok. The trade winds mean Aruba sits completely outside the Caribbean hurricane belt, making it safe year-round from tropical storms.

Aruba is a constituent country of the Kingdom of the Netherlands with its own entry requirements separate from the EU. Citizens of the US, Canada, UK, EU, Australia, and many other countries do not need a visa for stays up to 30 days (extendable to 90 days). A valid passport, proof of onward travel, sufficient funds, and accommodation details are required. Always check the latest requirements with the Aruba Department of Immigration before travel.

Aruba is a year-round destination — its location outside the hurricane belt and consistent trade winds mean it averages 360 sunny days per year with temperatures of 28–32°C virtually every day. The trade winds make even the hottest months feel comfortable. The only minor exception is October–November, which can bring slightly more overcast days. Carnival (January–February) and the Bon Bini Festival (year-round on Tuesdays) are great times to experience Aruban culture.

Aruban cuisine is a fascinating mix of Dutch, Venezuelan, African, and indigenous Arawak influences. Must-tries include keshi yena (a whole Edam cheese hollowed out and stuffed with spiced chicken or meat — the national dish), pastechi (crispy fried pastries filled with cheese or meat), funchi (cornmeal polenta), fresh red snapper with pan bati (cornmeal pancake), and ceviche made with local catch. The Wilhelmina Restaurant in Oranjestad and local lunch spots in San Nicolas serve the most authentic Aruban food.

Most visitors spend 5–10 days in Aruba, which gives enough time to cover the main highlights. Shorter trips are possible if you focus on one or two regions.

Aruba uses the Aruban Florin (AWG). Cards are widely accepted in cities, but carry some cash for markets, smaller restaurants, and rural areas.

The official language is Papiamento, Dutch, English, Spanish. In popular tourist areas English is generally understood, but locals always appreciate a few words in the local language.
