Malta

Malta is extremely safe and consistently ranks as one of the safest EU countries to visit. Violent crime is rare, and the main risk is petty theft in crowded tourist areas during peak summer season. Solo travelers, including women, generally feel very comfortable exploring on their own.

US citizens don't need a visa for stays under 90 days. Malta is a full member of the Schengen Area, so the same 90-day visa-free rule applies as elsewhere in Schengen. From 2025, travelers will need ETIAS authorization — a simple online pre-registration, not a traditional visa.

Tap water is technically safe — it's desalinated and treated to EU standards — but it has a strong, mineral-heavy taste that most visitors don't enjoy. Bottled or filtered water is widely available and commonly preferred, even by locals.

Tipping is not obligatory. Around 10% at restaurants is appreciated if service was good and no service charge is already included on the bill. Rounding up for taxis and small tips for hotel staff are welcomed but not expected.

The best time to visit Malta is Apr–Jun & Sept–Oct. During these months you'll find the most pleasant weather, fewer crowds, and the best overall experience.

Most visitors spend 4–6 days in Malta, which gives enough time to cover the main highlights. Shorter trips are possible if you focus on one or two regions.

Malta uses the Euro (€). Cards are widely accepted in cities, but carry some cash for markets, smaller restaurants, and rural areas.

The official language is Maltese and English. In popular tourist areas English is generally understood, but locals always appreciate a few words in the local language.
