Tobago and Trinidad's main tourist areas — Port of Spain's hotel districts, Carnival routes, and the beaches — are generally safe and welcoming, and most visitors have trouble-free trips. That said, Trinidad (particularly parts of Port of Spain) has had genuine urban crime concerns in recent years, so standard city-safety precautions are worth taking, especially at night and outside Carnival season and well-trafficked tourist areas. Tobago is widely considered the more relaxed and lower-crime of the two islands.

US citizens don't need a visa for tourist stays of up to 90 days. A passport valid for the duration of your stay and proof of onward travel are typically required at entry.

Tap water is generally safe to drink in Port of Spain and other main urban and resort areas, treated to reasonable standards. In more rural parts of Trinidad or Tobago, many visitors and locals prefer bottled or filtered water, which is widely available.

Many restaurants and resorts add a 10% service charge automatically — check your bill before tipping extra. If no charge is included and service was good, 10% is appropriate. Tour guides and drivers appreciate a small additional tip for a full-day excursion.

The best time to visit Trinidad and Tobago is Jan–May, dry season — though Carnival (Feb/Mar) is peak season for a reason. During these months you'll find the most pleasant weather, fewer crowds, and the best overall experience.

Most visitors spend 7–10 days to see both islands in Trinidad and Tobago, which gives enough time to cover the main highlights. Shorter trips are possible if you focus on one or two regions.

Trinidad and Tobago uses the Trinidad and Tobago Dollar (TTD). Cards are widely accepted in cities, but carry some cash for markets, smaller restaurants, and rural areas.
