Ghana is widely regarded as one of the safest and most politically stable countries in West Africa, with a long track record of peaceful elections and a strong tourism industry. Petty theft in busy markets and overcharging by unlicensed taxis are the main concerns for visitors, rather than violent crime. Standard city precautions apply, especially after dark in Accra and Kumasi.

Most nationalities need a visa to enter Ghana, obtainable online in advance through the Ghana e-Visa portal or on arrival in some cases — check current requirements before you travel, as policy has shifted toward visa-free entry for many African nationalities and continues to evolve. A Yellow Fever vaccination certificate is mandatory for all visitors.

November to March is the dry season and the best time to visit, with the clearest skies for wildlife viewing in Mole National Park, though the Harmattan wind can bring dusty haze in December and January. The rainy seasons (April–June and September–October) bring lush green landscapes but heavier showers, especially in the south.

Emancipation Day, held every August 1st, commemorates the abolition of slavery with ceremonies at Cape Coast and Elmina Castles, including reburials of the remains of enslaved ancestors. Ghana's 'Year of Return' initiative, launched in 2019, invites the African diaspora to reconnect with their heritage, and has made Ghana one of the world's leading destinations for roots and heritage tourism.

Most visitors spend 7–10 days in Ghana, which gives enough time to cover the main highlights. Shorter trips are possible if you focus on one or two regions.

Ghana uses the Ghanaian Cedi (GH₵). Cards are widely accepted in cities, but carry some cash for markets, smaller restaurants, and rural areas.

The official language is English (official), Twi, Ga, Ewe and other local languages. In popular tourist areas English is generally understood, but locals always appreciate a few words in the local language.
